AI search basics
Eight foundational questions. What AI search is, why Squarespace's defaults matter, the relationship between SEO and AEO, when citations actually show up, and how to measure visibility honestly. Skim this section first if you're new to the category.
What is AI search and how is it different from Google?
AI search is the family of products — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Google AI Overviews — that generate a written answer with cited sources, rather than returning a ranked list of blue links. Classical Google search still exists; AI search runs in parallel and increasingly above it.
Does my Squarespace site appear in AI search by default?
No. By default, Squarespace ships with most AI crawlers toggled off in Settings → Crawlers. Until you enable the retrieval bots (ChatGPT-User, Perplexity-User, Claude-User, OAI-SearchBot), AI engines cannot fetch your pages and therefore cannot cite you in answers. See the AI crawlers cluster.
Do I need both SEO and AI search optimisation?
Yes. AI engines pull from indexed content. A page invisible to Google is generally invisible to AI engines too. Classical SEO is the floor; AI-search optimisation is the ceiling. See the AEO and GEO glossary pages for the discipline split.
How long until an AI engine starts citing my site?
Honestly: it varies. Some Squarespace sites see citations within 2-4 weeks of an install; others take 8-12 weeks; some never do. The biggest predictors are whether the retrieval crawlers can fetch you, whether your content answers questions clearly, and whether the entity behind the site is recognisable.
Are AI search citations worth the work compared to classical SEO?
Depends on your niche. For service businesses where customers actively research providers (therapists, lawyers, photographers), AI citations matter and grow each quarter. For brand-only or product-only sites where buyers come direct, classical SEO is still primary. Most Squarespace sites are in the first category.
What's the difference between AEO and GEO?
AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) targets the extraction of quotable passages from your page by AI engines. GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) is the broader discipline that includes AEO plus entity-graph clarity, citation hygiene, and off-site reputation. Both are covered in the AEO and GEO glossary entries.
Can I measure AI-search visibility on Squarespace?
Partly. Squarespace's Advanced-plan AI Visibility panel monitors ChatGPT-specific mentions of your domain. For broader visibility (Perplexity, Claude, AI Overviews) you currently rely on manual sampling — run target queries weekly and log the citations. Third-party tools like Profound and Otterly help but aren't perfect.
Does Squarespace block AI crawlers by default?
Most of them, yes. Squarespace's Settings → Crawlers panel ships with most of the 26 listed AI bots toggled off as a privacy default. You need to enable the retrieval crawlers individually for your site to be citable. The full bot list lives in the AI Crawlers cluster.
ChatGPT
Six ChatGPT-specific questions. Crawler differences (GPTBot vs ChatGPT-User vs OAI-SearchBot), measurement, shopping, citation persistence. ChatGPT is the largest single AI search surface for most Squarespace owners' niches as of May 2026.
How do I get my Squarespace site cited by ChatGPT?
Three things in order. Unblock ChatGPT-User, OAI-SearchBot, and GPTBot in Settings → Crawlers. Restructure each page so the first 200 words answer the query the page targets. Ship Person and Organization JSON-LD so the brand and founder are entity-recognised. The full playbook lives in the ChatGPT cluster.
What's the difference between GPTBot and ChatGPT-User?
GPTBot is OpenAI's training crawler — it fetches content used to improve future ChatGPT models. ChatGPT-User is the on-demand fetcher that grabs a URL when a current ChatGPT user asks the model to read it. OAI-SearchBot is a third agent that builds the ChatGPT Search index.
Should I block GPTBot if I don't want my content trained on?
Yes. Blocking GPTBot prevents OpenAI from using your content for training future models without preventing ChatGPT from citing you at answer time (ChatGPT-User and OAI-SearchBot are the relevant retrieval bots). Many publishers split the difference: block training, allow retrieval. See the training-vs-retrieval cluster page.
How do I measure ChatGPT referral traffic on Squarespace?
Tricky. ChatGPT does not pass UTM parameters by default. Squarespace Analytics will show the visit as direct or referrer-unknown. The workarounds: filter by known ChatGPT user-agent strings if you have server-log access; rely on the Advanced-plan AI Visibility panel; manually sample target queries.
Will ChatGPT shopping work with Squarespace Commerce?
Yes if you ship the right product feed and schema. OpenAI's shopping integration requires the Squarespace store to have valid Product JSON-LD with price, availability, and SKU on every product page. The exact install pattern is in the ChatGPT shopping cluster page.
How long do ChatGPT citations stay live once I'm cited?
Until the model's cache or live retrieval refresh. For ChatGPT Search citations (live retrieval), the answer changes on every query. For training-derived references (older ChatGPT answers without web-search), the citation is baked into the model and persists until the next training cycle.
Perplexity / Comet
Five Perplexity-specific questions, including the Squarespace × Comet partnership newsjack. Perplexity favours comparison content, named-source citations, and dated reference posts more than ChatGPT does. The Squarespace partnership announcement matters for site owners.
What does the Squarespace × Perplexity Comet partnership mean for site owners?
Squarespace was announced as the official website-building partner of Perplexity's Comet browser in 2025. The partnership has marketing and discoverability implications, though Perplexity has not published specific citation-favouritism details. The newsjack and full playbook live in the Perplexity cluster.
What's the difference between PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User?
PerplexityBot is the training-and-indexing crawler that builds Perplexity's general index. Perplexity-User is the on-demand fetcher that retrieves a URL when a user asks Perplexity a question. Both need to be allowed in Settings → Crawlers for a Squarespace site to be reliably citable.
What kinds of content does Perplexity cite most often?
Comparison pages, listicles, named-source articles, and dated reference posts. Perplexity weights citation-density and named-author content more than ChatGPT does. The Perplexity citation-hygiene cluster page covers the patterns in install detail.
Does Perplexity read llms.txt?
Perplexity publishes its own llms.txt for its developer docs, which signals philosophical alignment, but has not publicly confirmed that Perplexity Search reads third-party llms.txt files at answer time. Treat llms.txt as a no-downside install with uncertain upside specifically for Perplexity. See the llms.txt glossary entry.
How do I show up in Perplexity for my niche?
Three steps. Unblock PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User in Settings → Crawlers. Build comparison and listicle content that names specific competitors and quotes named sources. Ship Person and Organization schema so the brand is entity-disambiguated. Manual sampling weekly to verify. The Perplexity cluster covers the full pattern.
Google AI Overviews
Six AIO-specific questions. The SGE-to-AIO history, the share-of-queries question (honestly hedged), the post-7-May-2026 FAQ schema policy, the multi-H1 problem on Squarespace 7.1, and the Google-Extended opt-out trade-off.
What is Google AI Overviews and how is it different from SGE?
Google AI Overviews (AIO) is the production answer-summary block above the classical Google results. Search Generative Experience (SGE) was the 2023-2024 experimental Labs predecessor that consolidated into AI Overviews on 14 May 2024. See the AI Overviews and SGE glossary entries.
What share of Google searches show an AI Overview?
Reports vary by study and query type. Third-party sampling has put the share at anywhere from 13% to 60% of queries depending on category and country. For informational queries the share is much higher than for navigational. We hedge specifics — read the linked Search Engine Land 2026 reporting honestly.
Does FAQ schema still help with AI Overviews after May 2026?
Partly. Google retired the FAQ rich result for general Search on 7 May 2026, restricting visible eligibility to government and health authorities. FAQPage Schema.org type is still parsed by AI Overviews retrieval, but the visible accordion result is gone for most sites. See the FAQ schema cluster.
How do I show up in AI Overviews from a Squarespace 7.1 site?
Rank first in classical Google for the query (AIO selects from indexed content). Patch the 7.1 multi-H1 problem via Code Injection. Structure the first 200 words as the direct answer. Ship Person and Organization schema for E-E-A-T signal. Full install in the AIO cluster.
Why is my Squarespace site not in AI Overviews?
Five common reasons: not ranking in classical Google for the query; multiple H1s breaking heading hierarchy; first 200 words don't answer the query directly; no Author/Organization E-E-A-T schema; query is in a category where Google rarely shows AIO. The AIO diagnose cluster page walks through each.
Should I opt out of AI Overviews via Google-Extended?
Two trade-offs. Google-Extended controls Gemini training; it does not control AI Overviews specifically (which uses Gemini but draws from the live Google index, not training data). Blocking Google-Extended affects long-term Gemini coverage but not AIO citation eligibility today. See the Google-Extended cluster.
Squarespace platform
Eight Squarespace-mechanics questions. SEO on the platform, 7.0 vs 7.1, JSON-LD installation, robots.txt limits, hreflang reality, Core Web Vitals defaults, E-E-A-T signals. The mechanical questions every Squarespace owner running an AI-search install asks.
Is Squarespace good for SEO?
Yes for small-to-mid sites where the platform's strong defaults (clean URLs, valid HTML, auto-sitemap, mobile-responsive) compound. The friction shows up at scale (limited robots.txt control, no native hreflang) or for deep technical work (custom schema, llms.txt). For 80% of small business sites, Squarespace's SEO is fine.
What's the SEO difference between Squarespace 7.0 and 7.1?
7.1 is fluid-engine and section-based; 7.0 is template-fixed. 7.1's section structure can emit multiple H1s by default, which needs Code-Injection patching. 7.0 has cleaner heading hierarchy out of the box but worse Core Web Vitals on default themes. The 7.0 vs 7.1 cluster covers the full trade-off.
How do I add JSON-LD to a Squarespace page?
Page Settings → Advanced → Page Header Code Injection, paste the JSON-LD block inside <script type="application/ld+json">, save. Code Injection is available on Business plan and above. For sitewide schemas (Organization, Person), use Site Header Code Injection. The JSON-LD glossary entry covers the syntax in detail.
Does Squarespace support llms.txt natively?
No. Squarespace blocks root-level file uploads. The workaround: create a Squarespace page at /s/llms-txt with the manifest body, then add a 301 URL Mapping from /llms.txt to that page. The llms.txt cluster walks through the four-step install.
Can I edit my Squarespace robots.txt?
Not directly. Squarespace auto-generates robots.txt and exposes only limited overrides via Settings → Crawlers. Granular edits require third-party workarounds (e.g. blocking specific paths via Code Injection meta-robots tags). The Squarespace robots.txt cluster page covers the limits and the workarounds honestly.
How does Squarespace handle hreflang?
It doesn't, natively. Multilingual Squarespace sites rely on subdirectory or subdomain structures plus manual hreflang injection via Code Injection. Above ~30 multilingual pages the per-page injection becomes maintenance-heavy. See the hreflang glossary entry and the Squarespace hreflang cluster.
What are the Squarespace Core Web Vitals defaults?
INP usually passes (Squarespace's JavaScript is well-tuned). CLS usually passes (native blocks include image dimensions). LCP often fails on default templates because hero images aren't aggressively compressed. The biggest single CWV move on Squarespace is hand-compressing the hero image. See the Core Web Vitals entry.
Does Squarespace pass E-E-A-T signals automatically?
Partially. The auto-emitted Article schema includes author and datePublished — useful but thin. For full E-E-A-T (Person schema with sameAs, knowsAbout, credentials, location), you need to add JSON-LD via Code Injection. The E-E-A-T glossary entry covers the install pattern.
Schema & structured data
Six schema questions. What structured data is, which types to ship, placement on Squarespace, the post-May-2026 FAQ rich-result policy, validation. The schema half of the install is mechanical; this section answers the common 'where does it go' questions in one place.
What is structured data and why does it matter in 2026?
Structured data is machine-readable markup that describes the meaning of page content in a vocabulary like Schema.org. In 2026 it matters because AI engines (AIO, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude) parse the markup to disambiguate entities and extract structured fields. The structured-data glossary entry covers the broader concept.
Which schema types should every Squarespace site emit?
Five baseline types. Organization (sitewide). Person (sitewide for the founder). Article (auto-emitted on blog posts). BreadcrumbList (auto-emitted on most pages). Service (on the install or pricing page). Add LocalBusiness if applicable, FAQPage only on a dedicated /faq/ hub. The schema pillar covers each in install detail.
Where do I paste JSON-LD on Squarespace?
Three valid placements. Site Header Code Injection (for sitewide schemas like Organization and Person). Page Header Code Injection (for page-specific schemas). Code Block in the editor (functional but couples schema to layout). Code Injection requires Business plan and above. See the JSON-LD glossary entry.
Does FAQ schema still trigger rich results in 2026?
Not for most sites. Google retired the FAQ rich result for general Search on 7 May 2026, restricting eligibility to government and health authorities. The FAQPage Schema.org type remains valid and is still parsed by AI engines — it just doesn't render the accordion in classical Google results anymore.
Should I keep FAQ schema on my service pages?
No. Post-7-May-2026, FAQ schema on service pages adds maintenance burden with no rich-result upside for non-government, non-health sites. Move FAQ content to a dedicated /faq/ hub and keep FAQPage schema there only. Remove from blog posts, service pages, product pages. See the FAQ schema cluster.
How do I validate my Squarespace JSON-LD?
Two tools. Schema.org Markup Validator (validator.schema.org) for structural validity — works for every type. Google Rich Results Test for the types Google still surfaces rich results for. After June 2026 the Rich Results Test will no longer detect FAQ specifically; the Schema.org validator continues. See the JSON-LD entry.
llms.txt
Four llms.txt questions. What the file is, whether major AI engines read it (honestly hedged — most do not publicly confirm), the Squarespace URL Mappings workaround for shipping it, and what goes inside. Low-cost, uncertain-upside install; we ship one anyway.
What is llms.txt and do I need one?
llms.txt is a plain-text manifest at the root of a site (e.g. example.com/llms.txt) listing the URLs an LLM should prefer when answering questions about the site. Whether you need one depends on your view of low-cost, uncertain-upside installs. We ship one; we don't promise it changes anything.
Do ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Claude read third-party llms.txt files?
Unconfirmed for all three in May 2026. Anthropic, Perplexity, and many publisher infra companies publish their own llms.txt files (publisher-side adoption is substantial), but no major AI engine has publicly confirmed reading third-party llms.txt at answer time. The llms.txt glossary entry covers this honestly.
How do I install llms.txt on Squarespace?
Squarespace blocks root-level file uploads. The workaround: create a Squarespace page at /s/llms-txt containing the manifest body in a Code Block, then add a 301 URL Mapping from /llms.txt to that page. The llms.txt cluster covers the four steps and the content-type caveat.
What should go inside my llms.txt file?
An H1 with the site name, an optional one-line blockquote summary, an optional context paragraph, and one or more H2 sections (Docs, Articles, Pricing) listing markdown-formatted links to the key URLs the publisher wants LLMs to know about. The llms.txt template cluster has copy-paste starters per business type.
The SquareRank install
Seven install questions. What we actually ship, what it costs ($299 one-time), how long it takes (7 business days), the 14-day Walk-Away Guarantee, plan requirements, 7.0 compatibility, international clients. Everything you need to decide before talking to us.
What does the SquareRank install actually do?
We ship the full AI-search install on your Squarespace site in 7 business days: unblock the retrieval crawlers, install Person and Organization JSON-LD with sameAs, ship llms.txt via the URL Mappings workaround, audit content structure for AI extractability, patch the 7.1 multi-H1 problem. One-time, no subscription.
How much does the SquareRank install cost?
$299 one-time. No subscription, no monthly fees, no surprise upsells. Fixed price for the install scope; if you need ongoing content work or audits, those are separate engagements we can quote when relevant. See the pricing page for what's included.
How long does the install take?
7 business days from access. Day 1 is access onboarding and audit. Days 2-5 are the install proper. Days 6-7 are QA, walkthrough, and handover. The deliverable is your site, installed — not a report or recommendations.
What's the guarantee?
14-day Walk-Away Guarantee. If the install doesn't ship clean, you ask for a refund via one email — no forms, no negotiation, no questions about which clause applies. Full refund. We'd rather lose the fee than carry an unhappy customer.
Do I need to be on a specific Squarespace plan?
Business plan or above. Code Injection is the install's primary mechanism, and Code Injection is locked to Business and above by Squarespace itself. If you're on Personal or Lite, the install is plan-upgrade-then-install rather than install-on-current-plan.
Do you work with Squarespace 7.0 sites?
Yes. The install is plan-version-aware: the 7.0 install handles the older template's heading hierarchy and structure (which are usually cleaner than 7.1); the 7.1 install includes the H1 patch and the section-block work. We assess on first contact.
What if I'm not in the US, UK, or EU?
Same install, same price, same timeline. The technical work doesn't change by jurisdiction. We're based in Germany and have shipped installs across North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific. Time-zone communication is async-first, so onboarding works wherever you are.
