Search Generative Experience (SGE)
Search Generative Experience (SGE) was Google's experimental AI-powered search feature, launched at Google I/O 2023 inside Google Labs and discontinued as a separate brand on 14 May 2024 when its production successor — AI Overviews — replaced it2. The term still appears in older industry writing and in 2023-vintage course material; the product itself no longer exists.
We keep this entry in the glossary because the SGE search query remains common — people Google "what is SGE" and need an honest answer. Treat any 2026 advice that says "optimise for SGE" as either outdated or imprecise; the live target is AI Overviews.
§01Definition
Definition
Search Generative Experience (SGE) was Google's experimental AI-powered search feature, launched at Google I/O 2023 inside Google Labs and discontinued as a separate brand on 14 May 2024 when its production successor — AI Overviews — replaced it.
SGE was a Google Labs experiment, not a default search feature. To see it, a user had to be signed into a Google account, navigate to labs.google.com, and opt in. Search queries from opted-in users returned an AI-generated answer block above the classical results, with the same source-card stack we now associate with AI Overviews. The feature was geographically restricted to the United States for most of its life and expanded slowly to other markets.
§02Timeline
The SGE timeline
May 2023: SGE announced at Google I/O 2023 and rolled out as an opt-in Labs feature. August 2023: SGE expanded into India and Japan. December 2023: SGE expanded into multiple additional countries. May 2024: Google relaunched the feature as AI Overviews, ended the SGE branding, and rolled the feature to all US users by default.
The transition was conceptually smooth and brand-distinct. The underlying technology (Gemini-powered generative search with cited sources) remained largely the same. The brand change reflected three things: graduation from experiment to product, expansion from opt-in to default, and a desire to put distance between the public face of the feature and several embarrassing Labs-era failures (the glue-on-pizza generation, eat-rocks suggestions, satirical-source citations).
§03Why
Why SGE became AI Overviews
The 14 May 2024 launch reflected three Google decisions: collapse the Labs branding now that the feature was production-ready, tighten the source-selection rules after the 2023 Labs failures, and roll the feature out by default to compete with ChatGPT's growing share of informational queries. The rebrand was strategic, not just cosmetic — AI Overviews ships with different defaults than SGE did.
Practical implication: any optimisation advice that targets SGE specifically is either talking about 2023-vintage tactics or using "SGE" as a sloppy synonym for AI Overviews. Read with care. The 2026 install pattern is at Cluster 1.3 and is AI-Overviews-specific.
§04Squarespace
What SGE means for a Squarespace site in 2026
Practically: nothing. SGE no longer exists as a product. Any Squarespace install advice tagged 'for SGE' should be re-read as 'for AI Overviews' and verified against the post-May-2024 documentation. The Squarespace-specific quirks that affected SGE eligibility (multiple H1s in 7.1 templates, FAQ schema placement, first-200-words discipline) all carry over to AI Overviews with one important update: the 7 May 2026 FAQ rich-result retirement materially changed the FAQ-schema half of the playbook.
If you encounter SGE in a Squarespace context — an audit deliverable, a forum thread, an older course module — the safe translation is "AI Overviews" with the 2026 caveats. The underlying technical work (clean heading hierarchy, lead passages, structured data, E-E-A-T markup) is essentially unchanged. The brand and the policy details around the brand are what moved.
