Squarespace Bing Copilot Checklist

Ten items in five groups — Crawlers, Bing Setup, IndexNow, Content, Measurement — each copy-paste codable from a Squarespace 7.1 site. Ship one group per session and the whole list takes about ninety minutes. This is the operational version of the three-lever framework the cluster hub walks through in narrative form.

This is the reference page, not the explainer. Each item is one action with a verification step. The leaves linked from each group cover the why and the how in depth; this page is the do-it list you keep open while you work.

How to use this checklist

Work through the groups in order. Crawlers first because the AI exclusion checkbox confusion catches owners early. Bing Setup second because Webmaster Tools verification is the floor. IndexNow third because freshness is the freshness lever that sits on top of verification. Content fourth because passage discipline is durable across every AI engine. Measurement fifth because AI Performance is the feedback loop that confirms the first four are working. Each item has a verification step — tick an item only when the verification passes.

The checklist assumes any Squarespace plan; the items flag where Personal plan needs the CNAME workflow instead of meta tag. Total ship time on a clean install is about 90 minutes. The longest single item is the content rewrite on your top pages (item 08), which can take an additional 45-90 minutes per page depending on length.

Group 1 — Crawlers (2 items)

The two crawler items take about three minutes total on a Squarespace site. Bingbot is not on Squarespace's 26-bot AI exclusion list, so the AI checkbox does not affect Bing crawling either way. The classical search checkbox is what matters — confirm it is on. The second item is the live Bingbot reachability test that confirms the site is actually crawlable, not just nominally allowed.

  • 01. Search-engine checkbox is on. Settings → Crawlers → "Allow search engines to crawl my site" should be enabled. The AI exclusion checkbox below it is irrelevant to Bing Copilot — Bingbot is not on Squarespace's 26-bot AI list4. Verify: open https://yoursite.com/robots.txt directly; confirm no User-agent: Bingbot followed by Disallow: / exists.
  • 02. Bingbot reaches the homepage. Run a curl test with Bingbot's user-agent string. Verify: HTTP 200 OK response. If it returns 403 or 5xx, the platform or a custom rule is blocking the crawler — open a Squarespace support ticket before continuing.

Group 2 — Bing setup (3 items)

The Bing setup items take about twenty minutes on Business plan and above (meta tag verification), or up to 48 hours wall-clock on Personal (CNAME with DNS propagation). The work is mechanical but the propagation step on Personal plan is the one most first-time setups underestimate. The bing-webmaster leaf walks both paths in detail; this checklist names the verifications you tick when each step lands.

  • 03. Site added and verified in Bing Webmaster Tools. Meta tag method on any Code Injection plan; CNAME on current Personal2. The bing-webmaster leaf documents both flows. Verify: Bing Webmaster Tools dashboard shows the site as Verified, not Pending.
  • 04. Sitemap submitted at /sitemap.xml. Squarespace auto-emits the sitemap at this path on every plan. Verify: Sitemaps panel in Bing Webmaster Tools shows status Success and a non-zero discovered-URL count.
  • 05. Crawl stats review scheduled weekly for the first month. Open the Crawl Stats panel weekly during weeks 1-4 after verification, then monthly. Verify: calendar reminder exists; first review note exists by end of week one.

Group 3 — IndexNow (2 items)

The IndexNow items take five minutes for the no-code path and about thirty minutes for the hosted-key automation path. On most Squarespace sites the no-code path is enough — use the Bing Webmaster Tools URL submission tool as the final step of every publish flow. The hosted-key path is worth setting up only if you publish more than once a week or want to ping multiple participating engines without going through Bing's UI.

  • 06. URL submission tool added to publish workflow. Bing Webmaster Tools → URL Submission. Submit each new or updated URL within 24 hours of publish. Bing accepts up to 10,000 URLs per host per day3. Verify: the submission history shows entries within the last 7 days.
  • 07. Hosted IndexNow key (only if you need automation). Generate an 8-128 character hex key. Host via the URL Mappings + page-slug workaround the IndexNow leaf documents. Verify: visit https://yoursite.com/your-key.txt in a private browser; the bare key string should render.

Group 4 — Content (2 items)

The content items are the largest time investment in the whole list but they pay across every AI engine, not just Copilot. The 134-167 word passage discipline that earns Copilot citations also earns ChatGPT, AI Overviews, Perplexity, and Gemini citations. Prioritise your top five trafficked editorial pages first; sweep the rest over time. Most owners need 45-90 minutes per page for the rewrite.

  • 09. 2+ named sources per editorial page. Replace vague attribution with publisher + date inline ("per Microsoft's February 2026 announcement," not "Microsoft has said"). Verify: count named publishers on each citation-target page; should be 2 or more.

Group 5 — Measurement (1 item)

One measurement item closes the loop. The AI Performance dashboard Microsoft launched on 11 February 2026 is the first AI citation report any major engine publishes directly to webmasters. Wait two weeks after verification before checking it for the first time — citation data needs that long to populate meaningfully. After the first read, set a weekly review for month one, then monthly thereafter.
